Ivan Ward, Head Chef at Woburn House

We are a nation of foodies and the Conference and Events market has responded by continually exceeding expectations to satisfy the delegate’s rich and fussy palate. Despite constant foodie innovation, there is one firm favourite that never wavers, a definite staple in British food culture. The sandwich.

Two slices of bread and whatever delicious concoction of flavours and fillings you desire in between them. In a recent survey the humble cheese sandwich was named the UK’s favourite lunch piece.

We purchase more than 3.5 billion sandwiches in the UK every year, spending about £7.2 billion on them.

So why is the sandwich so popular for meetings?  In the fast-paced world that we live in, convenience and budget is key, and the sandwich ticks all the boxes. Neatly arranged between two slices of bread, a sandwich can be eaten with one hand, meaning the other hand is free to do something else like check emails or make a call. The sandwich is designed to satisfy and sustain in a way that’s suitable to our busy lifestyles.

Sandwiches do not have to be boring though. We eat with our eyes first and foremost and sandwiches can be as colourful and vibrant as you like. Even if you’re going for quick and convenient, there’s always time to stop and appreciate the flavours we choose.

At Woburn House, we understand that the sandwich is far from disappearing off the menu.  So, we have embraced it and have created menus that we know delegates will enjoy, based on popular dishes but with a little added flair. We experiment with international flavours and change our menus to reflect the best seasonal produce.

The sandwich is well and truly here to stay, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t get creative with it.
